Xandir and Zevran, totally NOT the same character.

While I was a little late to play Bioware’s Dragon Age: Origins, I’m incredibly happy with myself for managing to snag a copy.

While it offered a pretty cut-and-paste fantasy RPG experience, something really stood out to me: the interaction between the player’s character and his/her party. As a matter of fact, some of the conversations I had with my party were the most memorable moments of the game for me.

Where's your swoopy moustache?

Well, here it is: what none of you have been waiting for. We’ve finally hopped on the podcast bandwagon with our new show, “Save Target As,” your source for weird sound effects and maybe some video games.

In our first (and possibly last episode), we discuss Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Assassin’s Creed 2, Left 4 Dead 2, STALKER, Dragon Age: Origins and Borderlands, and reveal our mysterious origins.

You’ve been warned.

DJ vs. Guitar Hero: there can be only one. December 25, 2009

When Guitar Hero first hit the gaming scene, it found its niche market on the PS2 and was praised as one of the most fun and innovative games of the last generation.

The franchise didn’t really take off until Guitar Hero 2, which extended its reach to the newest generation of consoles.

Now, the franchise, alongside Rock Band, has not only become a staple of gaming, but a staple of American pop culture in general. Whether or not this is good or bad for the gaming industry is still a debate to be had.

But recently, Activision decided to take the “Hero” label and slap it onto some fake turntables. I’ve been addicted to it for the last two weeks or so, and can safely say that this is the better of the two heroes.

Borderlands. What can I say about Borderlands?

Imagine Diablo: scores of baddies throwing themselves upon you, with only your inventory and stash of potions to fend them off.

Now hold that image, except place yourself in a backwater mining colony on the planet Pandora (aka a Mad Max-inspired post-apocalyptic wasteland), and replace the hordes of skeletons, goat-men, and (annoying) succubi with bandits and vicious alien creatures (like “skags” and “spiderants”).

Next, replace your spells and steel with bullets, electricity, and rocket-mounted “Outrunners”. Get the picture?

[Editor’s Note: We received this guest column in the mail the other day, in a crumpled envelope addressed only to “Videogames” and with no discernable return address. I don’t know how Dr. Brule found out where I live, but I thought it was only right to transcribe the letter for Internet reading. Enjoy!]

We all love video games. My favorite game has swords, uh, and knights — and you trade in your magic crystals to get a shield. The only problem with all of these games is that they’re so darn expensive! Well, thankfully ol’ Dr. Steve Brule is here to give you a few tips on how to save money on games.

[Check out Dr. Steve Brule’s tips after the break.]

As Zoey can attest to, being alone can have its consequences

Gaming has always been an immediate aspect of my life, both personal and social. In high school I was surrounded by many friends who shared this passion. Senior year came, left and we all went our separate ways. Like my co-editor Chris McKenna I, also went to the east coast and found the gaming scene there to be a little “different.”

And by “different” I mean “non-existent.”

MGE Screenshot 3 closeup

"We're watching you, brah."

I step out of the car and into the warm, humid air. Right away I’m confronted with a barrage of new and interesting sights, sounds, and smells. In the distance I can see a building. I walk towards it, open up its large, heavy doors, and descend a flight of granite steps to the dark basement below. There I’m greeted by a man who asks me for my name, my place of origin, my room number and my birthsign…

“Oh my God,” I think to myself. “This is Morrowind.”

Obviously, it wasn’t Morrowind. Not really. It was my college orientation, and although the resident assistants didn’t really ask for my birthsign, the rest of the ordeal was eerily similar.

brutal

Since Tim Schafer’s masterpiece, Psychonauts, Double Fine began working on a new project.  As I obsessively read the previews, I was excited about all the aspects of the game. Jack Black voicing the main character? Awesome. A world designed after an entire genre of music? Sweet. An RTS aspect? Ummmm…

So does Brutal Legend deserve a spot in the Schafer hall of fame? Or does it brutally disappoint? Hit the jump to find out.

College! No parents!

College! No parents!

College is all about being social. Your number of phone contacts skyrockets, as does your Facebook friend count; routine activities such as eating, studying, and sleeping (high five!) are no longer done solo. Freshmen are terrified of being alone, even for five minutes—you start wondering, “What’s everyone else doing? I bet they’re doing something really fun. Why hasn’t anybody texted me? Does anyone like me?” And then the bitter tears start flowing…
