As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a pretty big Magic: The Gathering fan. I first picked up the habit in junior high, when I thought that things like orcs riding dragon mounts were the coolest thing in the world, and it seems like every few years I pick it back up again, with only a slight twinge of self-loathing.

Now, when I heard that Stainless Games – whose past games include old Atari ports and an adaptation of Scrabble – in conjuntion with  Wizards of the Coast,  was making a new Xbox Live Arcade version of the trading card game, I was adequately excited.

See what I think of the game in my full review after the break.

Magic: The Gathering on XBLA the 17th June 5, 2009

Xbox Live is bringing us a lot in these next few months: Last.fm, Twitter, Facebook, and now, Magic: The Gathering.

Duels of the Planeswalkers, set for release June 17th, has a lot to offer at an estimated 40 hours of singleplayer campaign, 8 playable decks and over 280 cards.

Playing through the campaign unlocks cards and decks to customize your Duels experience. The game has been designed to assure whatever deck you make will be properly balanced – so you won’t find any Big Furry Monsters in this game.

As with any good Magic game, the fun is in the duels – you can play either head-to-head against or cooperatively with other players over Xbox Live.

Or, if you’re more of a people person you can challenge up to 3 other players in an all out free-for-all battle.

Players will also recieve a physical card with purchase – and it’s a damn good one, too.

Check out Duels of the Planeswalkers on Xbox Live Arcade on the 17th and look for our review soon after.
